About

The Black Horse Community Group Limited

Our group was set up by the community to protect, preserve and reopen The Black Horse in Grimston — buying the pub and ensuring it remains a viable, welcoming business for the benefit of the local and wider community.

Our Mission

The Black Horse has stood at the heart of Grimston for nearly 400 years. When it faced permanent closure, the community refused to let that happen. The Black Horse Community Group was formed to purchase the pub and secure it as a community asset — owned by the people, for the people, in perpetuity.

We are a registered Community Benefit Society, which means every member has an equal say regardless of how many shares they hold. One member, one vote. Profits are reinvested into the pub and the community — not paid to outside shareholders.

What We’ve Achieved

  • 2022 — Raised over £230,000 through our inaugural Jubilee Share Issue, with overwhelming support from the local community and beyond.
  • 2023 — Completed the purchase of The Black Horse, securing it as a community-owned pub in perpetuity.
  • 2023–present — The pub has been open and thriving, run by a tenant operator and supported by our volunteer community group.
  • Multiple awards — Recognised for community cohesion, enterprise, and fundraising at regional and national level.

Get Involved

The share issue is still open — you can invest in the pub and become a member of the community group. There is no minimum or maximum holding that changes your voting rights. Every shareholder has an equal voice in how the pub is run.
